Saving Bullies & Finding Homes

Our History

The American Bully Rescue of Ontario was formed in 2014 originally as a breed club for owners, fanciers, and breeders of the American Bully. The breed had just been recognized by UKC as it’s own breed in 2013 and was still quite rare in Ontario at that time.

Over the past few years, there has been a dramatic spike in the popularity of the breed. We soon gained recognition as the ‘go to’ group for the breed – whether it be for breed knowledge, breeder recommendations, dogs in need of rescue, or owners requesting support due to the Dog Owners Liability Act.

With the popularity came more and more Bullies in need and more confusion from the general public as to whether or not these dogs were ‘pit bulls’. It was then decided that we needed to form an official rescue for the American Bully. So in 2017, we did just that. Although our main focus is on assisting dogs in need, we also provide representation and knowledge regarding the breed. It’s important that the breed is promoted for what they are – their own breed. The American Bully.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

The American Bully Rescue of Ontario is a small, volunteer run organization. We rescue, protect, and improve the lives of American Bullies that find themselves homeless, abused, or neglected.

We work to promote responsible ownership while supporting responsible, reputable breeders that are dedicated to improving the American Bully breed’s genetics, traits and characteristics. We give local representation and defense for the American Bully breed to protect it against breed discrimination and Breed Specific Legislation.

Why Adopt?

Rescue VS Breeder

As a whole, we are not against responsible, ethical breeders of American Bullies. We support those that work to improve the genetics/health of the breed and breed to the standard. We do not support the breeding of ‘exotic bullies’. Without those breeding health tested dogs and improving the genetic pool, the breed would crumble. We love American Bullies and only want what’s best. Backyard breeding is NOT supported. Ask your breeder if they health test their breeding dogs (hips, elbows, cardiac, genetic, etc) and no, a simple vet visit or Embark is not health testing. Ask for references from people who have purchased a dog from them. Ask to meet the parents to ensure they are healthy and of stable temperament. There is so much that goes into getting a dog!

When you rescue a dog, you know what you’re getting in a dog. All dogs are in foster homes prior to being adopted so we know their personalities and what kind of home would be a good fit. They are also spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped to us for life. Many dogs come in with thousands of dollars worth of medical bills that owners don’t know about when buying a dog from a backyard breeder…Pictured to the left is Lexi who came to us as an owner surrender. She was purchased off a buy/sell website and they were not given all the details about her personality and dislike of other dogs! Lexi also had a fractured femoral head that needed FHO surgery. She was poorly bred and has a deformed leg so even though we fixed fracture she will always walk with a limp, but not painfully anymore.

As much as there are bad breeders, there are also bad rescues. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Talk to adopters, foster homes, get to know the rescue before you choose to adopt from them.  If they host events, visit them! We are more than happy to have a good chat and answer any questions.

Dogs adopted from ABRO are a part of our program for life. We will take back any dog at any point in its life if you can no longer care for them. Their microchips will always lead them back to us if they are lost as well.
